The stability of a formulation or product under typical conditions of use is critical to its efficacy, shelf-life and ultimate success. It might be essential, for example, for an agrochemical product to remain stable in a hot glass house, or for a pharmaceutical product to be defined for refrigerator storage in order to preserve the integrity of the active ingredient.
Formulation of specific materials, especially with respect to the concentration of divalent and trivalent salts, has a dramatic impact on emulsion stability. Therefore it is critical that emulsions are designed for stability at the working concentration of any salts required.
Aggregation, flocculation and Coagulation
The measurement of the extent of aggregation, flocculation and coagulation can be an important indicator of the stability of a formulation as a function of a variety of stresses, such as changes in temperature or pH. The sensitivity of light scattering techniques can give an early indication of formulation breakdown.
